With strong Finnish cultural roots, Michigan is the heartland of the U.S. automotive industry and is investing heavily in next-generation transport systems for both land and sea. Both regions are forest-rich and share a common interest in maintaining competitiveness through sustainable economic growth.

Key sectors of cooperation include:

  • Sustainable forest bioeconomy

  • Intelligent transportation, including smart maritime systems

  • Battery technology

  • Defense and dual-use technology

Finland and Michigan launched their partnership with an Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on March 4, 2020, signed by Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer and Finland’s Minister of Economic Affairs, Mika Lintilä. A renewal was signed on March 18, 2026, by Governor Whitmer and Ambassador Leena-Kaisa Mikkola.
