Finland Took over Chairmanship of Arctic Council
For the next two years, Finland will play a leading role in Arctic affairs. Finland assumed the Chairmanship of the Arctic Council from the United States on May 11 in the Arctic Foreign Ministers' meeting held in Fairbanks, Alaska. All Arctic Council Member States Foreign Ministers including Finland's Foreign Minister Timo Soini and U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson were present at the meeting.

Consulate General of Finland in New York is now accepting appointment reservations via online appointment reservation system only
As of Monday, May 15th all the appointment bookings regarding Schengen visa and Finnish residence permit as well as passport and notarial services are done online – appointment is mandatory.

Promoting Global Trade in L.A.
The Consulate General of Finland took part in the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce' 91st Annual World Trade Week kick-off breakfast held in Downtown Los Angeles on May 4. The event offers L.A. based consulates, organizations and trade offices a chance to showcase their business opportunities to a varied group of participants, who are interested in global trade.

Centennial Story of Finland Part 5: Recovering from War and Hosting Olympic Games 1947–1957
The Second World War had a heavy impact on Finland. Out of a population of some 3,7 million people, approximately 86,000 died in the war and 57,000 were permanently disabled. There were 24,000 war widows and 50,000 orphans. Nearly half a million refugees, Finns from the ceded areas, needed to be resettled.

Ambassador Kauppi Visited Colorado
Ambassador Kirsti Kauppi visited Colorado on April 26-29 on one of her Finland Centennial trips this year. The Ambassador had a very busy schedule – she gave several speeches, visited local universities and met with state officials, including Governor John Hickenlooper and Mayor of Denver Michael Hancock, as well as with members of the Finnish-American community.
