Consulate General of Finland in New York | Open position: Communications Intern

The Consulate General of Finland in New York promotes Finland’s commercial and cultural interests and strengthens Finland’s country image in the US through public diplomacy. The Consulate General is responsible for consular and Finland’s entry services in New York and 34 other states situated on the East Coast and the Midwest, in addition to two special administrative regions (Puerto Rico and US Virgin Islands).

We are looking for a BA / MA student intern in the field of communications, media, or international affairs who is at the end of their studies. Intern applicant has previous experience in producing content for various social media platforms and wants to hone their ability to create engaging social media content and learn about communications in the public sector.

We offer a full-time (36 h 15 min per week) internship position in the Consulate’s communications team for a duration of 3 months starting September 5, 2023, or as per agreement. The intern will work as part of the Consulate General’s Economic and Cultural Affairs and Communications team, assisting the Communications Adviser in daily social media and online communications duties.

The ideal candidate

  • has strong skills in both teamwork and working independently
  • has good IT skills and operates comfortably on different social media platforms and tools such as Canva
  • has a creative eye for producing content, graphics, photographs, and short videos
  • avidly follows social media trends, can analyze social media statistics and pitches new ideas on how to communicate about Finland to our target audiences
  • proficient verbal and written communication in English (Finnish not mandatory)

Past international experience, knowledge of Finland, and a good understanding of the society and media landscape of the United States are highly appreciated. Finnish skills and a connection to Finland are considered a great advantage; however, they are not required as we mainly communicate in English on our social media channels.

Duties include e.g.

  • Updating information about Finland on the Consulate’s social media channels, with a particular focus on Instagram, Twitter, and LinkedIn
  • Creating online content and campaigns together with our team members and external partners
  • Produce a bi-monthly newsletter with a focus on cultural and commercial activities
  • Photograph and film events
  • Help organize in-person and online events
  • Update the Consulate’s website when needed
  • Other duties as directed by the employer

The exact duties will be determined according to the current ongoing projects at the Consulate General and per the abilities and interests of the selected applicant.

This internship position is unpaid. All applicants must have appropriate funding for the internship from their educational institution or foundation approved by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and must show proof if selected. We cannot consider applicants without proof of sufficient funding.

Applicants based outside of Finland must have proper travel insurance or insurance provided by the educational institution. 

Security clearance:

Selected applicant is subject to background checks and will require a security clearance vetting prior to the start of the internship.
