Step Right Into the Fairy Tale in Moominworld
Finns love their Moomins and for many families an annual visit to the Moominworld is a must. Moominworld is a perfect combination of Tove Jansson's saga and authentic archipelago nature. In the park children have a chance to meet their favorite Moomin characters, roam around the Moominhouse and see a play at the summer theater. For adults one of most rewarding things is to see small children hugging and cuddling with the fluffy Moomins.
The theme park takes full advantage of its location in the Finnish archipelago. The park is located on an idyllic island in Naantali in Southern Finland. There’s a safe sandy beach that is suitable for small children as well as several nature trails. One of the latest additions is a barefoot trail that encourages people to kick off their shoes and go barefoot in the sand and over cobblestones dipping in the water.
Moominworld isn't a traditional amusement park since there are no rides. Instead the park can be experienced by doing, seeing, listening and touching. The children can get inspired by the surrounding nature and be creative with different activities.
The Moomins were created by Tove Jansson, but the man behind Moominworld and the Japanese-European Moomin animation series was Dennis Livson. Livson wanted to create educational children’s programs and he managed to get the Moomin production rights from Tove Jansson and his brother Lars. The animation series was aired in 1990-1991 and it became an instant hit in Japan and Finland.
Livson's idea to build a Moomin theme park in Finland progressed in the beginning of the 1990s. Moominworld opened in 1993 after Tove Jansson had approved the plans. The park's aim is to implement Moomin philosophy: family, friendliness, respecting other people, environmental awareness as well as safety and adventure.
Moominworld has been selected as one of the best theme parks for children, and visitors praise the park’s welcoming atmosphere, authentic look and educational content. The park will close in the end of August, but now is a good time to start planning your trip for next summer and get into the spirit by reading all the Moomin books.
