Company Profile: Uponor Invests in Twin Cities

The Finnish company Uponor recently celebrated the opening of its extended facility in Apple Valley, Minnesota. Uponor’s North American headquarters have been in Apple Valley since 1990, and the company has decided to continue to invest in Twin Cities because of its location, access to a wealth of talent, and the continued support from both the City of Apple Valley and the State of Minnesota.

Uponor is an international market leader, striving to provide better plumbing, as well as indoor climate and infrastructure solutions across Europe, North America and in other international markets. The company was founded in Finland in 1918, although the company’s roots date as far back as 1620. The company provides plumbing, fire safety, radiant heating/cooling, hydronic distribution piping and pre-insulated piping systems for residential and commercial applications.

The company invested $18 million to expand its PEX pipe manufacturing facility in Minnesota. The ribbon cutting ceremony was organized in mid-May. Jyri Luomakoski, CEO of Uponor, came from Finland to attend the event. In addition, local leaders Mark Dayton, Governor of the State of Minnesota and Richard Davis, CEO of U.S. Bank attended the event.

Finland was mentioned in all the speeches starting with the Governor’s referencing Uponor’s 396-year history as a Finnish company, and Richard Davis acknowledging Finland as one of the happiest countries in the world. The Governor officially declared May 17, 2016 as “Uponor Day in the State of Minnesota.”

Uponor’s decision to expand again in Apple Valley was partly due to the cooperation of the State of Minnesota and the City of Apple Valley in joining together in providing an attractive incentive package. To assist Uponor with the expansion, the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development made up to $1.5 million available through the Minnesota Investment Fund and the Job Creation Fund.

Currently Uponor employs approximately 500 people in Minnesota. The company has been named one of the Top 150 Workplaces in Minnesota for four years in a row by the Minneapolis Star Tribune.

The Minnesotans are happy that Uponor has invested also in the new Viking football stadium. Uponor designed the new snow melting system that captures snow in huge basins and melts it. This means that thanks to Uponor, Super Bowl 2018 attendees will stay safe and dry while visiting the Twin Cities.
