Company Profile: Amer Sports Provides Sports Equipment We Love
Every tennis player knows the Wilson racket and every baseball player the Louisville Slugger. These brands are iconic American products. But did you know that the brands are owned by a Finnish company Amer Sports?
Amer Sports is a sporting goods company with internationally recognized brands including Salomon, Wilson, Atomic, Suunto, Arc’teryx and Precor. The company offers a wide range of sporting goods whether you are interested in golf, football, alpine skiing, fitness training, bicycling, hiking or diving. The company’s U.S. headquarters are located in Ogden City, Utah in the historic American Can Company of Utah Building Complex.
Amer Sports is one of the most successful Finnish companies. It was established in 1950 in Tuusula, Finland as an industrial conglomerate with interests as diverse as tobacco products and publishing. Through the years Amer Sports has evolved into a multinational firm devoted to the production and marketing of sporting goods. The company’s headquarters is in Helsinki but only 500 of the 8000 employees are located in Finland.
The company’s focus started to shift towards sporting equipment in 1989 when it acquired the Chicago-based Wilson Sporting Goods Company that produces ball sports equipment like golf clubs and tennis rackets. Further acquisitions included the Austrian ski manufacturer Atomic in 1994 and the Finnish sports instrument maker Suunto in 1999.
Amer Sport’s main markets are North America and Asia. The company keeps on growing thanks to brands that the consumers love and trust. In addition to traditional sports equipment, Amer has placed more emphasis on sports footwear and apparel since the early 2000’s. This strategy has proved successful and Amer Sports now gets over one third of its profits from footwear and apparel. The company’s future looks bright as long as people are interested in outdoor activities and keep on playing sports.
