Rede von Botschafter Okko-Pekka Salmimies bei der Gedenkfeier für Mannerheim in Montreux am 6. Juni 2026.

Herr Oberst Kocher,

Monsieur le Syndic Gfeller,

Mesdames, Messieurs,

 

C’est un grand honneur de participer à cette célébration historique, qui rend hommage à la vie et à la mémoire du maréchal Carl Gustav Emil Mannerheim.

Comme beaucoup d’entre vous le savent, le maréchal Mannerheim est considéré, comme l’une des figures les plus marquantes de l’histoire de la Finlande.

Le maréchal a été l’un des principaux acteurs des premières années de l’indépendance de la Finlande.

il a été le principal architecte de la création de l’armée de la Finlande indépendante.

Il a été commandant en chef de l’armée finlandaise pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, puis président de la République après la guerre.

Mannerheim entretenait également des liens très étroits avec la Suisse, comme en témoigne la tradition de nous réunir ici, à Montreux, devant son monument commémoratif.

Cette année, cet événement a une importance particulière, puisque le maréchal est décédé à Lausanne il y a 75 ans.

Nous célébrons également le centenaire des relations diplomatiques bilatéral entre la Finlande et la Suisse.

En l’honneur de ce double anniversaire, cet événement sera célébré non seulement par l’orchestre militaire suisse, mais aussi par la fanfare de la marine finlandaise.

 

Ladies and Gentlemen,

 

June 4rth 1942 Marshal Mannerheim celebrated his 75th birthday.  To mark the occasion, the Finnish government conferred upon Mannerheim, the unique title of Marshal of Finland.

Marshal Mannerheim’s role as a unifying force and spiritual leader for the Finnish people fighting to maintain their independence, was of crucial importance.

I would like to read now an excerpt from the birthday greetings of June 4  1942, sent by Risto Ryti, then President of the Republic of Finland:

“At an age when most men’s strength has already begun to wane, Marshal Mannerheim has been called upon to shoulder a responsibility, that seemed overwhelming.

When the Soviet Union, with its giant armies, threatened to destroy our independence in the fall of 1939, the Marshal accepted the command-in-chief under circumstances, that the whole world considered hopeless.

When the same enemy’s attack swept against, and over our borders again in 1941, he remained steadfast in his post.

An unshakable sense of duty and responsibility, coupled with an awareness of his historical calling, dictated his decisions in all these matters.

He wished to share the fate of his people and their armed forces, to live with them, or to die. Alongside his sense of duty, two great qualities in particular, guided Marshal Mannerheim’s decisions: personal courage and trust in Finland.”

These were the words of President Ryti, another Finnish patriot, who sacrificed his health and freedom, on behalf of Finland and the Finnish people.

 

Meine Damen und Herren,

 

Heute, im Jahr 2026, richtet der Krieg erneut Verwüstungen in Europa an. Und wieder kommt der Angriff aus derselben Richtung.

Der totale und brutale Angriff Russlands auf die Ukraine richtet sich gegen die europäischen Grundwerte, wie Demokratie, Rechtsstaatlichkeit, Menschenrechte und das Selbstbestimmungsrecht der Staaten.

Das Erbe von Marschall Mannerheim zu bewahren, ist nicht nur eine Frage der Geschichtsbetrachtung. Mannerheims Beispiel hilft uns zu verstehen, was im Spiel ist, und was erforderlich ist, damit wir auch in Zukunft frei, nach unseren eigenen Werten leben können.

Ich möchte dem Präsidenten der finnisch-schweizerischen Offiziersvereinigung, Oberst Roger Kocher, sowie seinem Vorgänger, Oberstleutnant Andreas Suppiger, herzlich für die Einladung zu dieser Veranstaltung danken.

Je tiens également à remercier la ville de Montreux pour sa participation à l'organisation de cet événement, ainsi que pour l'entretien du monument dédié à Mannerheim et la préservation de sa mémoire.
