Gender equality is and has been one of the pillars upon which the Finnish welfare society is built. In 1906 Finland's national assembly became the first parliament in the world to adopt full gender equality. Today, the issue is an integral part of government policies and programmes.

Creative Economy and Beyond - International Congress in Helsinki
Creative Economy and Beyond (CEB) is an international congress carried out by University of Art and Design Helsinki, Finland. The CEB conference examines the role of creative industries in the economy. At the moment CEB is looking for lecturers and papers to be presented at this year's conference to be held on the 9th and 10th of September at the Cable Factory cultural centre, Helsinki.

Mauri Kunnas gets a British publisher
British publisher Boxer Books has bought English publishing rights to Finnish childrens' writer Mauri Kunnas' book The Vikings are coming!, a fun-filled story for the entire family about legendary Viking seafarers and their flaxen-haired maidens. The book will be released in Britain and United States in spring 2010.

Grammy Award for Esa-Pekka Salonen
Finnish conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen has received a Grammy award in the best solo classic album category. The prestigious award is for his recording with violinist Hilary Hahn and the Swedish Radio Symphony orchestra of performances of the Arnold Schönberg and Jean Sibelius Violin Concertos. Salonen was conductor on the recording released by the Deutsche Grammophon label.
