Declaration by the Presidency on the occasion of the first anniversary of the terrorist attacks in London in July 2005

Press release 221/2006
7 July, 2006

A year has passed since the multiple explosions in London on 7 July, which caused the deaths of 56 people. The EU wishes to reconfirm its solidarity with the victims and with the families of the bereaved. People across Europe and all around the world are united in condemning these despicable acts of violence.

Terrorism remains a major security threat for the European Union and for the international community as a whole. The resolute stand of the Union with regard to the fight against terrorism is clear from its strategic commitment: to combat terrorism globally while respecting human rights, and to make Europe safer, allowing its citizens to live in an area of freedom, security and justice.

The inhuman acts in London a year ago remind us that nobody is safe from the threat of terrorism and underline the need for all countries to work together to prevent and to suppress terrorist acts.
