Coming up this summer: PETIT MAL and HelsinkiHorizon 2030

Coming up this summer in the field of Finnish culture: adrenaline-charged contemporary circus PETIT MAL tours in the UK - plus a rare chance to visit the city of Helsinki in London's Southbank!

“Contemporary circus never the same after PETIT MAL”

The performance has no story, no plot, nor does it have much sense. However, what it lacks in storytelling, it makes up in eventfulness.

Petit Mal is a dynamic contemporary circus performance, combining dramatic arts and village idiot tradition in which sweat, bruises and contusions adorn the performers’ bodies. Circus artists Petri Tuominen, Rauli Kosonen and Kalle Lehto take the stage in a subversive, darkly humorous performance directed by Maksim Komaro.

Petit Mal emerges from the Finnish underground, with a chaotic, adrenaline-charged spirit, ready to throw themselves at you. The traditional form, poetry and soft movement of contemporary circus are challenged through randomness, dream-like logic and the menace of violence. Make sure not to miss it!

Petit Mal on tour in the UK in May and June 2010:

31 May-2 June, The Nuffield Theatre, Southampton
4-6 June, Queen Elizabeth Hall, Southbank Centre, London
8 June, Lighthouse, Poole
15-16 June, Eden Court, Inverness

Finland well presented at the London Festival of Architecture

London Festival of Architecture takes place from 19 June to 4 July 2010 and will be a city-wide celebration of architecture in the capital. Finland contributes to this year’s LFA, themed ‘The Welcoming City’, not just with one but two separate projects.

The Embassy participates by, to put it briefly, bringing Helsinki to London’s Southbank – in a sea container. Inside the container will be an exhibition titled HelsinkiHorizon 2030 with the theme of Helsinki’s future waterfront. The exhibition will present new facades of the city as some 20 km of new public urban waterfront will be opened for common use by 2030 with the development of three former harbour areas.

The printed image of large aerial view of the entire city of Helsinki extends from the container floor onto the walls and ceiling, summoning up the development plans of the city. Small scale models of the districts of Länsisatama, Kalasatama and Kruunuvuorenranta are placed on the wall on top of the aerial view in the points of actual geographical locations of the areas.

The exhibition is produced by Helsinki City Planning Department. Located in OXO Tower Courtyard in Southbank, the exhibition will be open daily from June 19th to July 4th.

At the same time in Holborn, the Finnish Institute in London proudly presents the “Nest”, a rooftop terrace showcasing the best of new Finnish wood architecture. The design consists of a mesh of shelter and integrated furniture. The pergola-like structure sits on the rooftop of the Institute’s Holborn headquarters, bringing an abstract timber garden into the urban environment.

Both projects lead up to 2012 when Helsinki will be the World Design Capital.
