Finland’s new eco-friendly icebreaker Polaris
Finland’s new icebreaker, Polaris, is a result of the world-famous Finnish know-how in designing, building and operating heavy icebreakers. Polaris is the world’s most environmentally friendly icebreaker.
Polaris is a masterpiece of Finnish shipbuilding expertise. It is the first icebreaker in the world capable of running on both liquefied natural gas (LNG) and ultra-low-sulphur diesel. The new icebreaker is a result of the world-famous Finnish know-how in designing, building and operating heavy icebreakers. It begins its service at a historical time when Finland celebrates its 100 years as an independent nation in 2017.
The vessel’s main task is fairway icebreaking on the Baltic Sea, which means assisting merchant vessels to and from Baltic Sea ports in wintertime. In addition, Polaris can perform oil spill response operations, emergency towing and rescue operations on the open sea all year round.
Polaris is the first new icebreaker to be launched in Finland since 1998. It’s engineered for 50 years of service life and operated by a crew of 16 seafarers with solid Arctic experience.
