Relations with China toasted at Finlandia Hall
The deepening of economic relations between Finland and China and the 60 years of diplomatic relations between Finland and China were celebrated on 26 March at a banquet hosted by Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Väyrynen. A business delegation representing more than 150 Chinese companies raised their glasses to the toast. Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping hopes that cooperation will take tiger leaps forward this year.

Record business delegation from China visited Finland
On 9-10 July, Minister Väyrynen hosted a large Chinese business delegation visiting Finland chaired by Vice Minister of Commerce Gao Hucheng. Väyrynen emphasised the importance of the visit for the trade relations between China and Finland and estimated that the Economic and Trade Cooperation Forum was one of the biggest export promotion events he has ever attended. The Forum was attended by some 240 Chinese and more than 300 Finnish business representatives.

Foreign Minister Tuomioja brought up China’s restrictions on information dissemination
During his meeting on Monday, 11 September with Li Zhaoxing, Minister of Foreign Affairs of P. R. China, Finnish Foreign Minister Erkki Tuomioja brought up the new regulations on the dissemination of information and expressed his concern over their restricting the free spread of information. Foreign Minister Tuomioja didn’t believe that the new regulations would represent a broader tightening of censorship, but he said that the situation will be followed closely.
