Linda Liukas tells the story of Ruby
It doesn't happen every day that a book written by a Finn comes first in Amazon Japan's book sales rankings. Well it did for Linda Liukas, a Finnish programmer and illustrator, whose first book "Hello Ruby: Adventures in Coding" translated into Japanese not only ranked second in all books sold on Amazon at one moment but also remained astoundingly on top of picture books category for one whole week in May this year.

Finland on show at the Tokyo International Book Fair
The Finnish Institute in Japan participated for the first time in the 23rd Tokyo International Book Fair on September 23 to 25. The fair was held at the Tokyo Big Sight, in which 470 companies and organizations from 20 different countries had on display about one million items at the exhibition hall.

Finnish liquid milk sent to affected areas in Kumamoto
Finnish dairy manufacturer Valio's baby liquid milk "Tuuti" were donated as relief goods for those suffering from the Kumamoto Earthquake. Ambassador of Finland Manu Virtamo visited Kumamoto together with Chairman of the Japan-Finland Parliamentary Friendship League Yuriko Koike on April 27th to directly hand the donation to the Governor of Kumamoto Ikuo Kabashima.

President Niinistö met with Prime Minister Abe and Emperor Akihito in Tokyo
President of the Republic Sauli Niinistö and his spouse Mrs Jenni Haukio made an official visit to Japan from 8 to 11 March 2016. The visit began in Kyoto and continued in Tokyo, where also Minister of Agriculture and the Environment Kimmo Tiilikainen, and a delegation of Finnish business leaders, took part in the program.

New Finnish government tests the waters
Finland’s main political parties started to discuss the formation of a new government immediately after the parliamentary elections on April 19. The new tripartite government finally named on May 29 has been formed by the three parties from the centre and right wing of the political spectrum who gained the most seats in the election: the conservative Centre Party, the populist “Finns” Party, and the moderate conservative National Coalition Party.
