Universal basic income has been talked about for decades and Finland is the forerunner in what may be a much needed rewiring of the social welfare system. The experiment in Finland is an experiment for a reason. No one can easily predict what the result will be, simply because this has never been done before. But in essence, this universal basic income experiment asks this question: When you give people the ability to make a choice, what will they choose?

The Finnish Invention Keeping People Safe: Safety Reflectors
Personal safety reflectors are a safety standard in Finland. It is required by law (Finnish Road Traffic Code) that pedestrians wear reflectors when travelling the roads after dark. You can commonly find reflectors sewn onto outer garments, dangling securely from pockets or hanging from a Finn's neck. Finnish children grow up with this as the norm. Where on Australian playgrounds there's the commonly known mantra "No hat, no play!" the corresponding safety item in Finland is the reflector.

From Finland: pianist Paavali Jumppanen – returns to Australia March 2017
Internationally celebrated Finnish pianist Paavali Jumppanen tours Australia for the 8th time in March and April in 4 states, and as with previous tours will give a special recital at the Embassy of Finland in Canberra on Monday 27 March, starting at 7.00 pm. Due to limited seats and availability, bookings must be made and payment is at the door.

An impressive feat from a Finnish architect within a record 19 days: Eliel Saarinen achieved second place amongst 137 entries in a competition to plan the capital city of Australia, now ranked by the OECD as one of the most liveable cities in the world. Canberra is a beautiful place to live, with its urban areas and green expanses merging together in a textbook balance, but what could Canberra have been, if Eliel Saarinen had finnish-ed first?
