The Squirrel at Nordic Nights
Finland’s entry in the Best International Feature Film category at the upcoming Oscars, The Squirrel, screening on October 27 at Nordic Nights.
Nordic Nights is a film series hosted by the Icelandic Club of Toronto and the Consulate of Finland in Toronto showcasing contemporary Nordic cinema.
Director Markus Lehmusruusu’s The Squirrel (Orava), 2026, is set in a future that has engineered nature away, life is clean, safe and comfortable.
Pasi, a designer of artificial animals, is mostly content with it — until he stumbles upon possibly the world's last living squirrel and takes it home. This is a serious hygiene violation, and inspector Emilia is assigned to the case. Keeping a wild animal alive turns out to be far harder than designing one. The squirrel gets depressed, Pasi falls for Emilia, and his carefully arranged life begins to unravel.
The Squirrel has already received high praise from iconic Finnish film director Aki Kaurismäki, impressed by its humanism as quoted in Variety Magazine.
Admission is free but registration is required for the screening at 7 pm on Tuesday October 27. Secure your spot for the theatre in person by emailing contact@icct.info. Register for online screening available for viewers anywhere in Canada.
