Long Good Thursday at Nordic Nights

Mika Kaurismäki’s Long Good Thursday (Mielensäpahoittajan rakkaustarina) brings back the Grump to Nordic Nights to round off the season on March 31.

Film still from Long Good Thursday

Nordic Nights is a series hosted by the Icelandic Club of Toronto and the Consulate of Finland in Toronto showcasing contemporary Nordic cinema with six alternating screenings a year.

Long Good Thursday (2024) is based on a novel by Finnish author Tuomas Kyrö.  He has written several books about the trials and tribulations of The Grump and this time the curmudgeonly character falls in love.   One might ask if it is even possible to love him back, but as Shakespeare puts it: “the course of true love never did run smoot”.  The Grump is attracted by a scent of a woman in a grocery store and meets Saimi, whose easygoing approach to life is enough to unsettle his routines.

Mika Kaurismäki’s earlier film adaptation of a Grump novel,  The Grump: In Search of an Escort was seen at Nordic Nights in 2023 and Long Good Thursday keeps looking at life with the same gentle humour.

“It was a lovely character study of love and affection continuing to exist in maturity.” (Weekly Wilson)
