Juho Kuosmanen's Compartment no 6 started its festival rounds with a bang. He was awarded the Grand Prix for best direction in Cannes, an honour he shared with with Iranian director Asghar Farhadi and his film A Hero.
The film was also given the Best International Film award at the Jerusalem International Film Festival. Consistent praise for Compartment no 6 around the world praises its charm, humour and the actors in the main roles. Seidi Haarla and Juri Borisov both shine with their subtleness and economy of expression that manages to convey so much.
Kuosmanen again creates his magic from the seemingly uneventful: two strangers travel by train from Moscow to Murmansk and come face to face with their loneliness. The screenplay of Compartment No 6 is loosely based on a novel by the same name by multitalented Finnish author Rosa Liksom. She received the Finlandia prize for literature for it in 2011.
His previous film, The Happiest Day in the Life of Olli Mäki (2016), premiered at TIFF.
Sony Pictures Classics has already acquired the rights for Compartment no 6 for North America, Latin America, Eastern Europe, Southeast Asia and the Middle East.
Public in-person screening on Saturday September 11, online from anywhere in Canada Sunday September 12 and Tuesday September 14.
