Flag Day of the Finnish Defence Forces marked in Canberra

The Embassy of Finland has hosted a reception at the Official Residence in Canberra to mark the Flag Day of the Finnish Defence Forces for the first time, bringing together representatives from the Australian Defence Force, the defence and diplomatic community, and broader security partners.

Finland’s Defence Attaché to Australia, Captain Jan Engström, Ambassador of Finland to Australia, Arto Haapea, and Australian Chief of Army, Lieutenant General Simon Stuart AO, DSC

Celebrated annually on 4 June, the Flag Day honours all personnel serving in the Finnish Defence Forces. The date was officially designated in 1942 and coincides with the birthday of Marshal Carl Gustaf Emil Mannerheim, a central figure in Finland’s history and a symbol of the nation’s defence.

In the speeches of the day, the Ambassador of Finland to Australia, Arto Haapea, and Australian Chief of Army, Lieutenant General Simon Stuart AO, DSC both highlighted Finland’s concept of Comprehensive Security, a whole-of-society approach that strengthens national resilience by bringing together authorities, businesses, organisations, and citizens. The event provided an opportunity to reflect on shared values between Finland and Australia in the field of defence.

The reception also marked the introduction of Captain Jan Engström as Finland’s first Defence Attaché to Australia, side-accredited from Tokyo. A Navy officer with over three decades of experience, Captain Engström’s appointment represents a significant step in developing closer bilateral defence relations and expanding cooperation opportunities in the region and with Australia.

It was a pleasure for the Embassy of Finland in Australia to mark the occasion with our key partners, and we thank all attendees for contributing to a meaningful and warmly celebrated afternoon.
