Press release 164/2006
30 May, 2006

The first meeting of the Helsinki Process Consultative Network will be held on 6-7 June in the annex building of the Parliament of Finland in Helsinki. Foreign Minister Erkki Tuomioja and his Tanzanian counterpart Asha-Rose Mtengeti Migiro will act as co-chairs of the meeting which is expected to attract some 50 participants, including Thomas Hammarberg, High Commissioner for Human Rights of the Council of Europe, and Amre Moussa, Secretary General of the Arab League. The broad theme of the meeting is "The Changing Context of Globalisation" and it examines recent changes in the global environment – from changes in governance structures to new thinking.

The Helsinki Process on Globalisation and Democracy was launched in December 2002 as a joint initiative of Finland and Tanzania to promote dialogue in order to find and improve common rules regarding the governance of globalisation. During its second phase, until the end of 2007, the process aims to promote the implementation of recommendations from the first phase and to continue dialogue on key issues raised by the Helsinki Conference. The Consultative Network is a high-level body consisting of global innovators and decision-makers from different backgrounds - governments, international organisations, civil society and the corporate sector - and will act as a 'broad tent' to bring together, encourage and link existing efforts and actors working with global issues.
