Physicist Stuart Parkin wins 2014 Millennium Technology prize for opening big data era
Technology Academy Finland (TAF) has declared innovator Prof. Stuart Parkin as winner of the 2014 Millennium Technology Prize, the prominent award for technological innovation. Parkin’s innovations have led to a huge expansion of data acquisition and storage capacities, which in turn have underpinned the evolution of large data centres and cloud services, social networks, music and film distribution online. The prize is worth one million euros.

Tove Jansson's 100th Anniversary
Tove Jansson (1914-2001), a painter, illustrator, author and the creator of the much-loved Moomin books, became one of the key artists in Finnish visual art during the postwar golden age of modernism. Jansson wanted to create art in her own terms, but only few have accomplished this with such originality.

Benefits of the free trade agreement between the EU and Canada
On 18 October 2013, the European Union and Canada reached a political agreement on the key elements of a free trade agreement. The agreement will be the most ambitious trade agreement that the EU has ever reached. Tariffs on industrial products in bilateral trade between the EU and Canada will be removed altogether, which will bring European companies annual savings amounting to EUR 500 million.

The Arctic Council opened doors towards the east
In its meeting, the Arctic Council granted observer status on the Council to six new states. In the Kiruna meeting, the Foreign Ministers also signed an agreement on cooperation on marine oil pollution, preparedness and response in the Arctic. Europe Information just published a book concerning the Arctic Region, “Arktinen kutsuu - Suomi, EU ja arktinen alue” (in Finnish, “Call of the Arctic – Finland, the EU and the Arctic Region”).
