Honorary Consuls Met in Ottawa
Finland’s honorary consuls gathered in Ottawa in the end of November for a one-and-a-half day meeting. We were happy to have nine out of our 13 honorary consuls in Canada around the same table to discuss Team Finland trade promotion, consular affairs and country branding.

Finland improves availability of residence permit services in Canada
Finland will outsource the collection of biometric data required for study- or work-based residence permit applications in Canada to Application Centres (AC) maintained by VFS Global. ACs will be opened in Ottawa and Toronto 22nd November and in Vancouver 29th November 2018. In addition to these, a “once-in-a-month” application center will be launched in Montreal on December 3rd 2018.

Postal voting 2019
A possibility to vote by post will be introduced in the parliamentary elections of spring 2019. This means that eligible voters who reside abroad permanently (expatriate Finns) and eligible voters who reside in Finland but are abroad at the time of the elections may vote by post. Advance voting will be arranged at Finnish diplomatic and consular missions abroad in the same manner as before.

Raimo Viitala, Finland’s Honorary Consul in Sault Ste. Marie, welcomes retirement after a successful 28-year term
Finland’s long time Honorary Consul Mr. Raimo Viitala retired from his post at Sault Ste. Marie last year. During his term he met many wonderful and interesting people, helped with visits and took part in cultural activities. Finland is currently in the process of appointing a new honorary consul in the area, a position that Viitala recommends wholeheartedly.
