Jalmari Helander(Link to another website.)’s  first foray to TIFF was in 2014 with his action flick Big Game, starring Samuel L Jackson.  It was shown in the Midnight Madness Programme, where his latest, Sisu(Link to another website.), will also be screened.

The rights were acquired by Sony Pictures at script stage, before any filming had started, which is a first in the history of Finnish cinema!

The fast paced action in Sisu is set in Finnish Lapland during WWII.  A lone prospector is on his way through the wilderness to the nearest town to deposit his gold.  He happens on a retreating German detachment who have other plans for it.  There is an epic contest for the gold, with Finnish sisu, or unyielding determination, playing a major part.  As in his previous films, deadpan Finnish humour is featured.

Two in-person screenings only:  Friday, September 9 at 11.59 pm at the Royal Alexandra Theatre(Link to another website.), 260 King Street West and on Saturday, September 10 at 8 pm at Scotiabank Theatre,(Link to another website.) 259 Richmond St. West.
