UN in Rome
There are three UN organizations focused on food and nutrition security operating in Rome: Food and Agriculture Organization FAO, World Food Programme WFP and International Fund for Agricultural Development IFAD. Additionally the Committee on World Food Security assembles in Rome bringing together various stakeholders.
The aim of the organizations is to promote the global state of food and nutrition security, reduce hunger and eliminate poverty according to the principles of sustainable development and Agenda 2030.
The multilateral team at the Embassy represents Finland in the UN organizations operating in Rome and promotes the realization of Finland’s goals in policy and strategy making as well as in practice. These goals include among other things the promotion of food and nutrition security and sustainable management of natural resources, climate change mitigation, improving the rights as well as food and nutrition security of women, girls and those in vulnerable positions, increasing the performance of the organizations, enhancing partnerships and productivity and promoting the UN reform.
Food and Agriculture Organization FAO
Food and Agriculture Organization FAO is a specialized agency of the United Nations addressing issues related to food security, agriculture, forestry, fishery and rural areas. The core functions of FAO focus on normative work and information providing as well as the application of knowledge to practice in co-operation with other stakeholders in operative work.
The World Food Programme WFP
The World Food Programme is the world’s largest humanitarian organization that delivers food assistance in diverse crisis situations such as conflicts and natural disasters. Additionally WFP is the responsible UN agency for logistics and ICT actions in emergencies.
The International Fund for Agricultural Development IFAD
The International Fund for Agricultural Development IFAD invests economic and technical resources in rural communities to increase smallholder farmers’ food production and improve their access to markets. For this purpose, IFAD grants low-interest loans to countries and donations for those indebted.
