OECD has reviewed the Finnish tertiary education system as part of the wider Tertiary Education Review- project. The review team concludes that the Finnish system is of relatively high quality. They also conclude that the parallel system of universities and polytechnics should be maintained. The team has found a few aspects of development in the management of tertiary education institutions. They also encourage the institutions for more and improved cooperation and collaboration.

Angel Gurría, who started his five-year term as the new Secretary-General of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development OECD on 1 June, visited Finland on 27-29 September 2006.The Secretary-General arrived to Finland at the invitation of Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Paula Lehtomäki, and during his visit he had bilateral meetings with the highest state leaders of Finland, and gave speeches at two EU events.

OECD:n ensimmäinen jäsenmaiden varhaiskasvatuksen järjestelyjä tarkastellut hanke Starting Strong I toteutettiin vuosina 1998-2000. Loppuraportin suosituksia on sittemmin luettu jäsenmaissa ja monin osin pantu toimeenkin. Hankkeen toinen vaihe Starting Strong II (2001-2004) on seurannut tapahtunutta kehitystä ja politiikkasuositusten toteutusta.

OECD julkaisi 12.9.2006 vuosittaisen tilastoyhteenvedon Education at a Glance 2006. Julkaisuun on koottu tietoa 30 jäsenmaan sekä useiden muiden maiden tuoreimmista kansallisista tilastoista. OECD:n tilastoinnin tavoite on, että aineisto on mahdollisimman pitkälti vertailukelpoista.

Suomen EU-puheenjohtajuuskausi alkoi 1.7.2006. OECD:ssä puheenjohtajuuskausi merkitsee Suomelle muun muassa EU-maiden kesken järjestettävien koordinaatio- ja tiedonvaihtokokouksien vetämistä. Kokousten luonne vaihtelee eri politiikka-alojen välillä EU:n ja jäsenmaiden toimivallan jaosta riippuen.
