Vacation in Iceland

Iceland as a destination has increasingly grown in popularity and is a safe country to travel to. The Ministry for Foreign affairs recommends normal cautiousness when travelling to Iceland.

Characteristics of Iceland includes unique landscape, such as volcanoes, hot springs as well as fjords. To guarantee a successful vacation, remember the following instructions listed below:

Criminality in Iceland:

  • Iceland has a low criminality rate, but be cautious with valuable items, such as money and travel documents. Leave valuable items you do not need for everyday use in a hotel safe deposit box. Never leave valuable items or travel documents in the car. Bring copies of your passport and other important travel documents with and store them separately from the original documents.

Iceland’s weather and nature:

  • Iceland’s weather varies throughout seasons. It is not uncommon that the weather can within a day go from sunshine to heavy rain.
  • Due to the weather, it is recommended to pack clothes that endures extreme weather conditions, such as strong wind and rain. Wool jumpers, raincoats, warm underwear, beanies and gloves are recommended, also in summer season. Remember your bathing suit if you wish to swim in the hot springs or local swimming pools!

  • There is seismic activity in Reykjanes peninsula and in December 2024, a new series of volcanic eruptions started. As of now, there have been five eruptions since December, the latest began 29.5.2024.
  • Earlier eruptions have been restricted to a small area and have not disrupted air traffic at Keflavík international airport. Blue Lagoon Spa has occasionally been closed due to its close geographic location to the eruptions. In case of an eruption, follow the advice of local officials and stay away from the eruption site.
