ICI SYKE/GAFRD developing assessment of dredging impacts
Description What is done in the programme or project and why, what results are pursued, who benefits from the activities and who are involved in the implementation.
The project of the Finnish Environment Institute SYKE and the Egyptian partner General Authority for Fish Resources Development GAFRD aims at the improved capacity of GAFRD to monitor the environmental quality of Lake Manzala in collaboration with other organisations. Pollution has reduced the lake's productivity and fish stocks have collapsed. The expected results of the project are to 1) develop planning for dredging operations and environmental impact assessments, 2) prepare guidelines for sustainable dredging, and 3) strengthen Lake Manzala joint operational monitoring and data management system. In the long term, the project aims at improved environmental status of Lake Manzala for sustainable fish production thus also supporting the livelihood of the local population.
