Ministers Kanerva and Väyrynen to attend UN General Assembly

Foreign Minister Ilkka Kanerva will attend the opening week of the 62nd UN General Assembly on 23-28 September in New York. Foreign Trade and Development Minister Paavo Väyrynen will attend the General Assembly on 25-26 September. Ministers Kanerva and Väyrynen will co-chair the Finnish General Assembly delegation chaired by President Tarja Halonen.

President Halonen and Minister Kanerva will together meet the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon. Kanerva's UN week schedule includes a meeting with the EU foreign ministers, a joint EU-Russia meeting with the Russian foreign minister, and a transatlantic foreign minister meeting hosted by the United States. Kanerva will also host a Nordic foreign minister meeting which will focus on the Nordic UN cooperation. The minister will have bilateral meetings with foreign ministers representing various Middle East countries and a meeting with the US Under Secretary of State.

Minister Väyrynen will attend the meeting of the Helsinki Process co-chairs, the Tanzanian foreign minister and Minister Kanerva, on Wednesday. Minister Väyrynen will also have bilateral meetings.
