Results of the Helsinki Process to be evaluated in Tanzania

The achievements of the Second Phase of the Helsinki Process and the experiences gained from multi-stakeholder cooperation will be reviewed in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania on 27–29 November.

The theme of the conference is ‘Inclusive Governance – Bridging Global Divides’ and it will be attended by about 150 representatives from different countries, international organisations, civil society organisations and business. The topics on the agenda are peace and security, poverty and development, human rights, global governance and the environment. In this connection, a meeting of the Friends of the Helsinki Process and three side events will also be held.

Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Paavo Väyrynen will attend the final day of the conference, when the conclusions of the conference will be presented. State Secretary Teija Tiilikainen will lead the Finnish delegation on the first two days of the conference; she will also present the greetings of the co-chair, Foreign Minister Ilkka Kanerva, at the Official Opening. The Tanzanian delegation leader will be Bernard K. Membe, Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Co-operation.

Foreign Minister Ilkka Kanerva, Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Paavo Väyrynen and Tanzanian Foreign Minister Bernard K. Membe agreed on continuation of the Second Phase of the Helsinki Process until September 2008, when the Helsinki Process Final Report will be released and presented, among others, to the Secretary-General of the United Nations. Talks on the future of the Helsinki Process are now in progress.

The Helsinki Process is a project launched on the joint initiative of Finland and Tanzania in 2002 with the aim of promoting democracy and the development of common rules for achieving a more just globalisation.
