Everyone’s input is needed to save the Baltic Sea
The Baltic Sea Action Summit to be held in Helsinki on 10 February is no ordinary summit. This gathering is made unique by its participants: leaders representing governments, the business community, NGOs and philanthropy. “This promises to be a fine and productive summit,” Jari Luoto, Ambassador for Baltic Sea Issues at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs, said on Thursday at the press conference organised to provide background information about the summit.

Nordic foreign and security policy cooperation to be intensified
The Nordic foreign ministers discussed further development of Nordic foreign and security policy cooperation when they met in Oslo on Monday, 9 February. The meeting received an independent report on the topic compiled by Thorvald Stoltenberg, former defence minister and foreign minister of Norway. Foreign Minister Alexander Stubb welcomes the Stoltenberg report, and considers it a valuable input in the discussion of further development of Nordic cooperation.

Nordic Foreign Ministers discussed the global financial crisis and cooperation in security policy
The Nordic foreign ministers met in Helsinki on Monday, 27 October. At the meeting of the Nordic Council, they discussed the global financial crisis that has struck the economy of Iceland particularly hard. They gave their full support to Iceland and its efforts to pull through the difficulties arising from the global financial crisis. In addition, the foreign ministers discussed Nordic cooperation in the EU, the UN, Afghanistan and in Arctic regions.

Finland passes on Barents chairmanship to Russia
I am highly satisfied with our meeting, where cooperation in the Barents region took concrete steps forward, Foreign Minister Ilkka Kanerva stated at the press conference following the Barents Euro-Arctic Council meeting in Rovaniemi on 15 November. The meeting confirmed the establishment of a permanent international Barents Secretariat at Kirkenes, Norway. At the meeting, Kanerva also handed the Council chairman’s gavel over to Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov of Russia.

Nordic Foreign Ministers discussed cooperation in the North and Baltic Sea region
Discussions among the Foreign Ministers of the Nordic countries, which took place in connection with a session of the Nordic Council, were held in a highly positive and open atmosphere, said Foreign Minister Ilkka Kanerva, who chaired the meeting in Oslo on Wednesday, 31 October. The main topics of the Foreign Ministers’ meeting were regional cooperation in the North and the Baltic Sea region.

A diverse discussion palette for Foreign Minister Kanerva in Denmark
In his visit to Denmark on 8 October, Foreign Minister Ilkka Kanerva had a varied agenda ranging from politics to culture; the topics discussed extended from the Finnish chairmanship of the OSCE in 2008 to the possibilities for Denmark to serve as Finnish artists’ springboard to the world. Kanerva met with his Danish colleague and with the Secretary General of the Secretariat for the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly and the leadership of the Cultural Institute of Finland in Copenhagen and Finpro.
