Türkiye–Finland Cooperation Event on Industrial Decarbonisation and Sustainable Water Management

A Finnish-Turkish cooperation event was held in Helsinki on 22–23 September 2026, bringing together companies, researchers and public sector representatives. The focus was on industrial decarbonisation, sustainable water management and new opportunities for joint research and business.

The Turkish delegation included around 30 business leaders and experts from leading industrial groups. The visit followed a similar event in 2025 and aimed to develop concrete collaboration, including joint projects under Horizon Europe.

The event was organised in cooperation with Business Finland, the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland, the Finnish Embassy in Ankara, Türkiye’s Directorate for EU Affairs, the Turkish Embassy in Helsinki, the Istanbul Chamber of Industry, Mining Finland and ARTAŞ.

The European Green Deal and the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) are increasing the need for low-carbon production, energy efficiency and sustainable use of resources. With its large industrial base and close trade links with Europe, Türkiye is investing in technologies for the green transition. This creates opportunities for Finnish companies, research organisations and technology providers.

The sectors represented included steel, cement, fertilisers, aluminium, mining and critical minerals, energy, circular economy and water treatment.

The first day included discussions on Finnish-Turkish economic relations and green transition cooperation. Speakers included Jarno Syrjälä from the Finnish Ministry for Foreign Affairs, Lassi Noponen from Business Finland and Bülent Özcan from Türkiye’s Directorate for EU Affairs.

B2B matchmaking in the afternoon gave Finnish and Turkish companies an opportunity to meet potential partners and discuss business, research and innovation cooperation.

On the second day, the delegation visited VTT Bioruukki and Aalto University’s hydrogen research facilities. The visits showcased Finnish research and technology and provided further opportunities to discuss future cooperation.
