Still on the road towards the development aid effectiveness

The recent "2006 Survey on Monitoring the Paris Declaration" by the OECD Development Assistance Committee DAC suggests that there is still a long way to go in order to reach the goals set for effective development assistance.

The Paris Declaration is an international agreement signed 2 March 2005 by more than 100 donors, partner countries and international organisations in order to work together for more effective development assistance. The background of the Paris Declaration lies in the United Nations Millennium Development Goals. Its five main commitments are ownership, alignment, harmonisation, managing for results and mutual accountability. The aim is to increase cooperation between donors and partner countries. Partners are also encouraged to take more responsibility in leadership of the development projects. The progress is measured by 12 indicators, whose targets are set to 2010. The figures in this survey will serve as a baseline in the future.

The report presents the findings and recommendations of the first round of monitoring and it implies that greater efforts are going to be needed if the agreed targets are to be met.
