Finland For The Future – One Tree Per Student Campaign Grows Stronger with India

Finland is committed to nurturing a sustainable future through its partnership with India. Proudly continuing its initiative, 'Finland For The Future - One Tree Per Student' campaign, the country recognizes the potential of collaboration in driving innovation. Finland expresses gratitude to India for the growing number of Indian students choosing Finland for their higher education.

In a symbolic act, Finland donates a tree for every Indian student commencing their educational journey in Finland. These trees signify the importance of education in shaping sustainable living, a shared vision that Finland wishes to promote together with India. This gesture aims to cultivate a metaphorical branch, intricately linking the roots of these students in India to the bridges connecting our nations.

The trees, predominantly fruit trees and agroforestry trees, are currently being planted in Nongnah Village, Meghalaya, forming a small forest in collaboration with Business Finland, the Embassy of Finland in India, and the Finnish startup TreebuddyEarth(Link to another website.)

To date, almost 1000 trees have been planted since the initiative began in 2022. Each student gets a unique link to locate their tree, creating a tangible link between education, the environment, and cultural exchange.

These students serve as invaluable ambassadors, nurturing cultural exchange, fostering innovative ideas, and enhancing trade between Finland and India.

Finland envisions this initiative as a continuation of the successful tradition initiated in 2022, anticipating an increase in both planted trees and Indian students studying in Finland. The campaign highlights education's pivotal role in promoting environmental consciousness, sustainable development, and cultural understanding.

The first tree was planted in the garden of the Residence of the Ambassador of Finland on 14 December 2022 by H.E. Minister of State for External Affairs and Culture of India Ms. Meenakashi Lekhi and H.E. Minister of Employment of Finland Ms. Tuula Haatainen.

Finland remains resolute in its commitment to deepening understanding and collaboration with India, intertwining the roots and branches of both nations for a greener and more interconnected future.
