High-Level Roundtable Discussion on Africa’s Natural Resources Held in Tanzania
The Institute of African Leadership for Sustainable Development (Uongozi Institute) will conduct a high level roundtable discussion on the 28th of February in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. The topic is “Managing Natural Resources to Ensure Prosperity in Africa”.
The event will be officially opened by the Hon. Mizengo Pinda, Prime Minister of the United Republic of Tanzania. It will be attended by senior officials in the Tanzanian Government and CEOs of relevant public institutions and private sector enterprises.
Prof. Paul Collier, Director of the Centre for the Study of African Economies at Oxford University will give the key presentation. Prof. Collier is known for his cutting edge work on natural resource booms and their impact on the economy.
Better management of natural resources
The primary goal of this forum is to reflect on how countries like Tanzania, rich in natural assets can better manage those resources. Ways in which political, economic, and corporate governance can promote responsible and just management of natural resources will also be discussed.
The focus of the discussion will be on mapping the quantity and value of natural resources in Africa and the forms of exploitation of these resources, including the necessary institutional checks and balances and relevant taxation.
Ways of spending the revenue from natural resources and the Corporate Social Responsibility of investors will also be explored. Another function of the roundtable discussion is to promote exchange of information and actively debate public policy.
Cooperation between Finland and Tanzania
The roundtable discussion is being organised with the support of the Government of Finland. Finland also supports the Uongozi Institute mentioned above. The Institute complements efforts of African Governments in building leadership capacity for sustainable development.
The Institute of African Leadership for Sustainable Development (Uongozi Institute) was established by the Government of Tanzania with the support of the Government of Finland. The role of the Institute is to complement efforts of African Governments in building the capacity of leaders entrusted with developing and implementing national policies and strategies that take into account the global environment and internationally agreed goals and principles in order to contribute to the development and sustainability of these countries.
