Negotiations concerning the Convention on Enforced Disappearance ended successfully in Geneva

The negotiations on a draft Convention on Enforced Disappearance, conducted under the leadership of the Permanent Representative of France, ended successfully after a two-week session in Geneva on 23 September 2005.

The Convention was negotiated within an exceptionally short period of time - in only three years.

The Convention's protection against enforced or involuntary disappearance means that a person cannot be deprived of his or her liberty without access to sufficient information about the case.

The next step is approval of the Convention during the next session of the UN Commission on Human Rights in spring 2006 and subsequently in the UN General Assembly.
