Candidature of Prof. Petteri Taalas as Secretary General of WMO

The government of Finland has designated Professor Petteri Taalas as candidate for the position of WMO's next Secretary-General for the term 2016–2019. He is motivated to work to provide better services for Members and their national meteorological and hydrological services (NMHS).

Weather, climate, water and related environmental conditions have significant impacts on society, environment and economy.  Being better prepared to extreme weather events and adapting to the changing climate will be increasingly important for nations and their economies around the world.

- The NMHSs are in a key position to provide adequate warning and safety services. By focusing on concrete actions and by listening to the needs of the NMHSs, the WMO can best support them in this task, Petteri Taalas says. - As a leader, my focus is on enhancing the usefulness of the WMO activities.

The WMO – a specialized agency of the United Nations – focuses on weather, water and climate. The WMO has been instrumental in establishing the global weather and climate observing system.
