President Halonen to chair a UN Panel
President of Finland Tarja Halonen has been appointed co-chair of the UN High-level Panel on Global Sustainability. The Panel has been established by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. President Halonen will act as chair together with President Jacob Zuma of South Africa.

Finland and Zambia to strengthen the development partnership: focus on sustainable economic growth
Bilateral consultations between the Government of the Republic of Zambia and the Government of the Republic of Finland took place on 19-21 May in Lusaka. Finland will continue to increase cooperation with Zambia to strengthen productive capacities especially within the micro, small, and medium-sized enterprise sector.

The forest sector discussed by Minister Väyrynen and Minister Namugala of Zambia
During her visit to Finland, Catherine Namugala, Zambia’s Minister of Environment, Natural Resources and Tourism, met on 20 May with Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Paavo Väyrynen. Minister Namugala is accompanied on her visit to Finland by a 12-person forest sector delegation that will learn more about Finnish forestry policy, timber harvesting, further processing and private forest management while in Finland.

Baltic Sea Action Summit in Helsinki a success
The Baltic Sea Action Summit that was held in Helsinki on Wednesday, 10 February was a success in the opinion of the arrangers. The summit attracted a large and high-level group of participants to Finlandia Hall to tell about their commitments to protect the Baltic Sea. The summit was hosted by President of the Republic Tarja Halonen, Prime Minister Matti Vanhanen and Mr Ilkka Herlin, the Chairman of the Baltic Sea Action Group, who together convened the summit.
