Finland first country in the world to launch gender equality award
A common denominator for prosperous and socially and economically stable countries is the fact that women participate equally and fully in all levels of society. Including women in decision-making and politics would solve many of the world's problems. To mark its 100th year of independence Finland has launched a gender equality award on International Women's Day 8.3.2017.

Finland's Embassy in Ankara handles family reunification applications of Syrians as well
Syrian citizens may obtain a visa to Turkey, says Tarvo Nieminen, Administrative Officer for Consular Services in Finland's Embassy in Ankara. Over the past few days, the Finnish media has reported about Syrian citizens' difficulties to get a visa to Turkey.

The Nordic Countries support the Cyprus reunification negotiations
The frozen negotiations for reunification of Cyprus were resumed after the leaders of Greek and Turkish Cypriot communities on the island adopted a joint declaration to re-launch the negotiations in February. The chief negotiators of both communities also attended the seminar, held in Brussels on 6-7 March, that addressed the economic benefits of potential reunification.

Strong support for the mediation initiative of Finland and Turkey at the Opening Week of the UN General Assembly
The ministerial level Friends of Mediation meeting, which was jointly hosted by Foreign Minister Erkki Tuomioja and Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu of Turkey, gathered in New York on Tuesday, 20 September to discuss the prerequisites for more effective mediation. The topic attracts widespread international attention because Qatar, the chair of the 66th Session of the UN General Assembly, raised mediation as the main theme of the Opening Week.

This was the opinion shared by the participants in the open discussion organised by the Ministry for Foreign Affairs at the House of the Estates on Monday, 4 April. Väyrynen: Business opportunities offered by Turkey even greater than expected
Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Paavo Väyrynen met the Energy and Natural Resources Minister of Turkey, Taner Yildiz, on 27 January. In the discussions, the focus was on business opportunities offered by Turkey particularly with a view to Finnish technology and know-how, and the geopolitical position of Turkey between the energy resources of Central Asia and the Middle East and the European consumers.
