Foreign Minister Al-Malki of the Palestinian National Authority and Foreign Minister Stubb discussed the Palestinians’ situation
“Improvement of the situation in Gaza is highly important,” Foreign Minister Alexander Stubb stressed after meeting with Foreign Minister Riyad Al-Malki of the Palestinian National Authority, who is visiting Finland. The Foreign Minister stated that Finland and the EU foster the birth of an independent Palestinian state by supporting the Middle East peace process. He added that high-level talks will continue to be held regularly between Finland and the Palestinian National Authority.

The Foreign Minister’s statement concerning the convoy to Gaza on 1 June
The situation concerning the flotilla to Gaza on 1 June remains unclear. The ships were directed to an Israeli port. Some of the people on the ships were detained and others have been expelled from the country. Clarification of the situation continues, but we have not yet obtained a complete picture of what happened onboard, or what will happen now to the people onboard and the cargo.

Foreign Minister Stubb’s statement on the situation in Gaza
Early in the morning, Israeli naval forces stopped a convoy of ships carrying humanitarian aid bound for Gaza. According to our information, at least ten people died. I wish to express my deep condolences to the families of those who died.

The EU sent a clear message to the Middle East: Settlement building must end
The Foreign Affairs Council of the European Union sent a clear message to the Middle East on 22 March: Israel must stop building settlements. During the meeting Foreign Minister Alexander Stubb proposed that a joint trip to the Middle East be made. “Is it not worth considering that all 27 Foreign Ministers would observe the border situation in Gaza together with Ashton. This would be important symbolically,” Stubb stated at the press conference in Brussels.

EU Foreign Ministers heading for the European Council summit with a wide range of affairs
On Monday, 15 June, the Foreign Ministers of the European Union were up to their ears in work with the Middle East, the Western Balkans as well as the preparations for the approaching EU Council summit. Foreign Minister Stubb and Minister of Migration and European Affairs Astrid Thors believe that the Member States will give their approval for the re-appointment of President of the European Commission Jose Manuel Barroso as early as at the Thursday-Friday summit.
