Foreign Minister Stubb: Gaza tragedy could have been avoided
Hamas should have renewed the truce instead of breaking it and it should not have continued the tragedy with rocket attacks causing civilian suffering. Israel's self-defense can be understandable but the operation is too extensive, says Foreign Minister Alexander Stubb in his blog on Monday 29 December. Finland has a role in the situation through the EU which now has an increased responsibility as the United States is in the midst of getting a new leader.

OECD PISA 2006: excellent results for Finnish students
The knowledge and skills of Finnish students in science, mathematics and reading are of the highest order. In science and mathematics they are rated best in the OECD countries and in reading the second best. The main focus in PISA 2006 was science literacy.

Foreign Minister Kanerva discussed the goals for Annapolis in his meetings in the Middle East
On Wednesday, 21 November, Foreign Minister Ilkka Kanerva met in Ramallah Palestinian Authority’s Foreign Minister Riad Al-Malk and Prime Minister Salaam Fayyad. The Palestinian Authority hoped for a significant EU contribution by the side of the United States, particularly at the stage when the implementation of the results of the Annapolis meeting begins. On Thursday, Kanerva will meet his Israeli colleague Tzipi Livni.

Foreign Minister Tuomioja sees several promising signs in the Middle East situation
In the recent meeting of EU Foreign Ministers in Bremen, the atmosphere around the situation in the Middle East was more hopeful than usual, Foreign Minister Erkki Tuomioja writes on his website. The weapons have remained silent for the time being, and a new government of national unity, with representatives from Hamas and Fatah as well as third, independent forces, has started its work.
