Foreign Minister Erkki Tuomioja’s statement on the decision to advance plans for settlement units

Finland condemns Israel’s decision to advance plans for 2,610 housing units in Givat Hamatos. The implementation of the plan to build a new settlement in East Jerusalem would constitute a threat to the prospects for a peaceful two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, as well as to the position of Jerusalem as the capital of both states. Finland calls on the Government of Israel to reverse its decision.

In line with the EU’s policy on the Middle East peace process, Finland will not recognize unilateral developments that pose a threat to the aim of a two-state solution. Israel’s settlements are illegal under international law, and the settlement policy imposed in East Jerusalem and the West Bank will have consequences on the future development of relations between the EU and Israel. Finland urges the parties to confirm their commitment to, and continue negotiations for reaching a peaceful and lasting two-state solution.
