HRC62 Interactive Dialogue on Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Expression
62nd Session of the United Nations Human Rights Council: Interactive Dialogue with SR on Freedom of Expression. Statement by Media Freedom Coalition Co-Chairs, delivered by Ambassador Heidi Schroderus-Fox, Permanent Representative of Finland on Tuesday 17 June 2026.
Mr. President, I have the honour to speak on behalf of Finland and UK, the co-chairs of the Media Freedom Coalition. The coalition brings together 51 countries, civil society, legal experts, international bodies, as well as journalists and media workers to strengthen the rights to freedom of expression and opinion.
We thank the Special Rapporteur for her report and dedicated work throughout her tenure.
In conflict settings, independent journalism is particularly critical. Journalists can help keep people safe by providing information on unfolding conflicts. During conflicts, independent media provides timely information critical for the communities affected. Factual, timely reporting can save lives and livelihoods. A free, independent, pluralistic media can help achieve peace, and help sustain it.
Special Rapporteur Khan, how can we best work together to strengthen the conditions for free media?
Thank you.
