Meet our new trainee!

Interns are an essential resource for the Embassy of Finland, bringing energy, fresh perspectives, and valuable support to our daily work. Their contribution not only strengthens our team but also helps build the next generation of professionals.

Hakam Hamadon has recently joined the team at the Embassy of Finland in Bucharest. With Finnish, Romanian, and Syrian roots, he brings a multicultural perspective and great enthusiasm. We had a short chat with him to learn more about his background, his experience in Romania, and what he hopes to discover during his internship at the Embassy.

Could you tell us a few things about yourself?

I'm Hakam, I'm half Romanian and half Syrian, but I was born and raised in Finland. I'm a Master's student in Political Science. In my studies I have focused mainly on international relations, international security, and peace and conflict research. This traineeship is one of the last steps before I complete my degree.

How has having Finnish, Romanian, and Syrian roots influenced you?

It has made me see the world from multiple angles. Growing up navigating different languages and traditions has broadened my perspective and shaped the way I see the world. Having three roots isn’t always that great when trying to answer the simple question of where I’m from.

What made you choose an internship at the Embassy of Finland in Romania? What expectations did you have when you arrived?

I thought that working at the Finnish Embassy in Bucharest would not only help me gain valuable experience but also help me connect better with my Romanian roots. I arrived with a mix of excitement and nerves, but what surprised me most was the warmth of the embassy team.

What do you like most about Romania so far?

I have always loved the mountains here. The architecture of Bucharest’s old city is also truly beautiful.

Have you discovered any Romanian food that you particularly liked?

My favourites are definitely ciorba de vacuta and sarmale, but papanasi takes the victory.

What would you recommend to a Romanian visiting Finland for the first time?

Finland is most beautiful in the summer, but Lapland in the winter is also absolutely worth a visit. Go on a road trip and explore our lakes and national parks. Finland might feel quiet at first, but once you embrace it, you will fall in love with it.
