Finnish Foreign Minister Tuomioja and Turkish Foreign Minister Davutoğlu promote mediation in the UN
Foreign Minister Tuomioja and Foreign Minister Davutoğlu of Turkey are jointly hosting the ministerial level Friends of Mediation meeting in New York, to be held on 20 September during the Opening Week of the UN General Assembly. During the meeting, the ministers and the UN and regional organisation representatives will exchange topical experiences of mediation activities. The purpose is to provide the UN Secretary General with guidelines for increasingly effective mediation.

Finnish PM Jyrki Katainen – EU needs stricter rules & stronger discipline
Prime Minister Jyrki Katainen said in his speech in the Parliament that for Finland membership of the EU and monetary union has been a choice worth its weight in gold. Success of a small country is highly dependent on that of the EU. But it is critical to have influence within the Union and that must be earned. It is of crucial importance that the common rules are followed.

Finland to Support UNODC Piracy Prisoner Transfer Programme
The Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland has granted Euro 190 000 for the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) Piracy Prisoner Transfer Programme (PPTP). The main aim of the programme is to construct a new prison in Garowe, Puntland. The 500 bed prison will be mainly used for housing convicted Somali pirates.
