Democracy and human rights on the agenda in Warsaw

The OSCE´s main annual human rights and democracy event, the Human Dimension Implementation Meeting, HDIM was opened in Warsaw on 26th of September, and lasts until 7th of October. This year´s meeting´s special focus is on the situation of Roma and Sinti, free elections and freedom of movement.

Human dimension comprehends the questions of democracy and human rights, and the theme of the meeting is to view the implementation of the commitments given within the OSCE framework. In addition to OSCE Participating States a large number of representatives from international organizations and NGOs are attending the meeting. What makes this meeting unique is the equal participation of the NGOs’ representatives to the meeting alongside with governments’ representatives.

As a part of the meeting´s many side events, Finland is organizing an event relating to women’s role in peace processes and reconstruction. The keynote speaker is MP Pekka Haavisto, Foreign Minister´s Special Representative for the crises of the Horn of Africa.
