The meeting of the President of the Republic and the Cabinet Committee on Foreign and Security Policy on Friday 14 February 2003 considered the current situation vis-à-vis Iraq. The Government of Finland continues to give its full support to the efforts of the UN Security Council concerning the issue and hopes that the Council will remain unanimous. Strict adherence to the resolutions of the Security Council is required of Iraq. These resolutions call for Iraq to disarm itself of all weapons of mass destruction.

The Iraq crisis can be resolved peacefully if disarmament of the weapons of mass destruction is verified by the arms inspectors. The human and technical resources used in the arms inspections can be strengthened in consultation with the inspection leadership.

Any use of military force will require authorization from the UN Security Council.

In its preparations for discussions concerning Iraq at the European Council on Monday 17 February 2003, the Government of Finland underscores the importance of the unity of the Union. Finland supports the Greek Presidency in its endeavours to secure the broadest possible understanding with regard to the issue.
