Press release 16/2006
20 January, 2006

Finland underscored more effective control of small arms transfers, enhanced support to the affected countries and gender mainstreamed approach in tackling the small arms problem in a meeting in New York on 9-20 January. The meeting took place to prepare the review of the UN Programme of Action to tackle the problem of small arms in summer 2006.

EU and Finland emphasised the graveness of the problems caused by small arms and strongly supported a more effective implementation of the Programme of Action and the need to agree on new measures to address the scourge of small arms.

The Finnish delegation was led by Ambassador Kari Kahiluoto and included experts from the Ministry of the Interior and civil society representatives.
