Embassy 50 years: Greetings from Martti and Eeva Ahtisaari

Martti served as Finland's Ambassador to Tanzania in 1973 to 1976. We fell in love with the country immediately and we often remember our time in Tanzania. Dar es Salaam was the political center for many of the independent African countries in the 1970s and it had an active and engaging international diplomatic community. We had the pleasure to receive many guests during our stay and established lifelong friendships. Some guests got also to enjoy the Finnish sauna built in the yard of the Embassy. Since then, our paths have often met with our Tanzanian friends, such as the Tanzania’s former President Mkapa. We are very pleased with the warm relations between Finland and Tanzania and we send our warmest of congratulations to the current and former employees of the 50-year-old embassy!

The first Finnish ambassador accredited to Tanzania started his duties in Dar es Salaam 1.3.1971. In recognition of the anniversary, we will publish recollections and short memoirs of past Finnish ambassadors to Tanzania.
