EU Presidency Statement on the elections in Bosnia and Herzegovina

Press release 395/2006
2 October 2006

The Presidency of the European Union is pleased to note that the preliminary assessment of the International Election Observation Mission (IEOM) concludes that the general elections in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) on 1 October 2006 were conducted generally in line with international standards for democratic elections. However, it was disappointing that despite the particular significance these elections had for BiH's future, the voter turnout remained low.

The Presidency calls for a rapid formation of the new governments and their commitment to accelerate the reforms necessary for BiH's further rapproachment to the EU.

The Presidency shall give its full support to BiH in fulfilling these aims.
