EU Presidency Statement on the military coup in Fiji

Press release 509/2006
5 December, 2006

The Presidency of the European Union condemns the take-over of executive powers from the democratically elected government of Fiji by the Fijian military forces and reiterates its strongest possible opposition to actions that undermine the democratic process in Fiji.

The Presidency demands that the military forces stand back and give way to the democratically elected political government.

Following its statements of 26 October and 27 November, the Presidency urges all those involved to pursue resolutely, and through the appropriate channels, dialogue aimed at settling the current crisis and restoring the democratic stability of the country.
