Official inauguration in Astana a media event
Followed by extensive media coverage, the newest Finnish Embassy was officially inaugurated in Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan, on 3 March. Good opportunities for development of economic relations, in particular, are seen in both countries. “Establishment of an embassy opens a new chapter in relations between our two countries,” Minister Väyrynen stressed during the official inauguration of the Embassy.

Finland deepens relations with Eastern Europe, the South Caucasus and Central Asia
“This is the first time policy for this region has been compiled into one document,” Foreign Minister Alexander Stubb stated at the press conference held on Friday, 29 January to publicise Finland’s policy in Eastern Europe, the South Caucasus and Central Asia. The policy includes assessments dealing with the region’s internal development and international position, bilateral relations between Finland and the countries of the region, and relations between the EU and the countries of the region.

Finland gets a bridgehead to Central Asia
“Kazakhstan is important to Finland strategically and with regard to energy strategy and trade. It is highly important for us to be represented in Central Asia,” says Ambassador Mikko Kinnunen, the first Finnish ambassador to Kazakhstan. He also serves as ambassador to Kyrgyzstan.
